Warmer weather has arrived in Brevard County, FL, and that means it’s time to prepare to open your pool. Before you plan that summer kick-off party, take a moment to check for leaks in your pool or spa. Let’s explore a few reasons your pool may have developed a leak over the cooler months.
Finding a Pool Leak
Before opening for the summer, you should confirm that everything is working properly. This includes confirming you do not have a leak.
If you have a vinyl pool, start by inspecting the liner. Tears are often a problem with this material.
If you have a gunite or fiberglass pool, check the fittings. They must fit well and be tight.
Check the skimmer area for problems. If the skimmer assembly came loose over the winter, you will likely have a leak in that area. The water level should be about one-third of the distance below the top of the skimmer assembly.
Check the ground around the pool for wet spots, and also note the location of any plumbing lines that may be concealed under the decking. A small leak in the return or intake lines is easy to repair.
If you have water on the floor in the pump room, you can easily pinpoint the leak. Check all fittings, especially the intake line carrying water to the filter, for a tight fit.
After your inspection, turn on the motor and look for water dripping from the entire pump assembly. This will help confirm the location of a leak in the pump.
Pump System
If the pump and motor were not used while the pool was covered, clean and prime the pump before turning on your system. This includes the skimmer and the filter within the pump. Use the pump’s backwash to clean the filtration system.
When you first turn it on, your pump should run for eight to twelve hours. If you find water on the floor of the pump room, you may need repairs to the intake or return lines. Your seal shaft and impeller may also need to be repaired at the beginning of the season.
Cracks and Fissures
If you notice a leak when you remove the cover, you may have a structural leak, crack, or tear. Structural leaks can only be detected once you clean and refill the pool to the recommended level.
Check all the fittings and tiles that might have come loose when covered. Water could easily seep into cracks in the grout and work its way behind tiles. Look at light fixtures, railings, drains, and skimmer attachments. They should all be secure.
Grounds and Decking
In dry weather, excessive water around the grounds and pool deck may indicate an underground leak that requires repairs. Don’t tear up the decking looking for the leak.
